Dead Witch Walking

Dead Witch Walking - Kim Harrison This book started slow for me. It actually took me a couple of days to get through the beginning, and I almost put the book down. The first half contained a lot of setting up the story and describing a bit of Rahcel's history. Rachel also spent a good portion of the first half of the book being scared, and I was grateful when she finally manned up and moved on with her life. Being frightened is normal, but when she's so scared she can hardly function, it gets a bit old. Thankfully, she became the kind of heroine I want to invest my time in.

Obviously, I decided to contiue on with the book and I'm glad I did. The second half of the book was so exciting and interesting that it made up for the slow beginning. The story became very intense all at once, and I actually ended up staying up late one night because I couldn't put it down. Rachel doesn't have any really special powers, doesn't sound like a particularly talented witch, but her determination and perserverence make up for any lack of training and talent. Once she begins something, she won't stop until it's finished. I really admired that quality. The side characters were great! Jenks the pixie was completely entertaining, and I loved that he was married and had a whole passle of kids hanging around. I'm a bit confused about Ivy. There wasn't a whole lot of information on her, and I honestly don't know what to think about her. And what's her deal with Rachel? Is it unrequited love or does Ivy have some mysterious vampire thing going on that we just don't know about? I want to find out more about that whole thing more than anything, I think. Oh, and the bad guy in the novel is confusing as well. His name is completely escaping me at the moment and I don't have the book in front of me. How embarrassing. Anyway, I can't wait to find out what happens with him either! I know he's a bad guy, but he seems sexy and alluring anyway. Rachel also seems to think so, and I wonder where the relationship between the two is going to lead. Why does he want her so bad?

Basically, Dead Witch Walking leaves a lot of questions unanswered and I want to find out what all is going on. I was talking with a guy at work about the book, and he said that I need to keep going and that by book three I'll be hooked. I hope so! I've been craving another really great series. Maybe this will feed the beast...
